Phenol Injections

Phenol injections are kind of old school. ( Or so I was recently told) They don't do them in Phoenix. The last batch of Phenol was contaminated and so only small amounts are available when we do botox. Last round of Botox I was not a happy camper and I suck at being a mom so I avoided all surgeries until I couldn't put it off any further.

Phenol works longer, faster and better for Tyler. So we did it. The results are almost immediate. Tyler is also a trooper and was up going as soon as they would let him out of his room. He was discharged 35 minutes after he came back.

They came to find us to do discharge papers and Tyler was out doing just what he always does. He plays ball.

We got back to our Grannie's house and Grannie AND Grandpa were home!! Grandpa had been VERY sick AGAIN and we were so glad he was home. So the boys went and played doctor and hang out with the cool people and left me to my own thoughts of overwhelming proportions.

Grayson won't have a thing to do with his Grandpa in the hospital but at home he won't leave him alone!

We had to wait one day to make sure we were seizure free and so we were close to a children's hospital instead of in the air. And then we left for home!!!

Landing and watching for our dad

The surgery worked and Tyler is as loose as we can get him. Unfortunately his legs are not doing so well. We are looking at a larger and more invasive surgery and my poor heart is not sure it can do it just yet!

But we were glad to be home.

Gait Lab {Shriner's Utah Trip}

One of the biggest reasons we went to Utah was for the Gait Analysis Lab. It was such a cool experience. They have a great lab there and it was interesting to watch.

We dropped off Grayson at Aunt Sheena's and he did SOOO good. He didn't cry, which is HUGE and he said he was going to be brave and he did. Sheena was surprised at how quiet he was when I was not with him. But he is such a shy little terror.

Dallas didn't get to come with us because he was already on his way home with a small stop at Scheels to see his grandpa's animals. ( His Grandpa's stuffed animals are on rent at Scheels! How cool is that!)

Tyler and I got a burger at Shriner's and headed down to the basement to start the lab. It can take anywhere from 1-3 hours and it is not all fun and games. It was VERY cool to watch and very HARD to watch. Tyler was at an age where he did really well, but his abilities also make it very hard to be ok when things get hard. We had to get creative about how we got him through.

In a gait lab they have 2 physical therapists and a full time engineer. They video tape his gait. He walks back and forth for about 25 minutes on a matt and then they stretch, pull and prod at his little body to see how far his muscles stretch and how far they can get his stiff joints to move to.

The pT working on figure out how much he can bend and move and come to a correct position. This was really hard and someone ended up crying. And it wasn't them..... me and Ty did!

The stuff on his legs were what the engineer was working with. Those things lit up as he walked. It was awesome!

After the lab we went to get Grayson, Headed back to our Granny's house and then had Nicky come over for dinner.

Day 2: Sunday

Sunday morning brought on bouts of laughter and loving on Nicky's dog, Oreo. The kids ( Kayden, Koy and Lexi) were with their mom until later, and Nicky was still there to play with us. We took full advantage and after conference session we went to the local park at my moms.

My parents live in Small Town USA. I grew up there. My mom grew up there. Her dad Grew up there ( kinda) and it is LITTLE!! The local park, however, is KILLER. Nicky and my mom and I went down after the boys left on the side by four wheeler. The boys loved it.

At the park we played with Nicky's dog and had him chase the ball and since he can't drop it, Grayson and Tyler would run circles around him trying to get it out of his mouth. We were all laughing so hard.

During the second set of Conference, the boys played outside, non stop. Grayson also realized that my moms neighbor has a cat that is really fluffy. He also likes to be petted. But doesn't like to come with called. We also thought that there was a possessed cat. Turns out that Cat was Grandpa's and he loves Grayson.

Later that night, my dad went to pick up the kids and my sister left. My kiddo's took off outside to play with the cats. I went out to check on them and do my homework and they were missing. I got in my dad four wheeler and went looking. Sure enough, the boys were lost. They were right in the middle of a HUGE field full of piles of dirt. They were almost to the river. Luckily they were stuck.  They were crying and screaming to help! I saved the day by climbing over the piles and saving my kiddos.

The boys said they were looking for the cats and then they couldn't find the right place that was our house. In other words, a blind kid and a 3 year old can't find their grandparents house, that they don't visit very often. Thank goodness the town is little. And thank goodness they didn't get to the river.

The rest of the night was spent with Kayden and Koy and especially Lexi. I love them so so much!

Fall Break- Day one!

Arizona has some strange school schedules. However, we love the breaks. We get a shorter summer and longer breaks. Fall break is about a week and a half, Spring break is 2 weeks and Christmas is 2.5 weeks. Sometimes that is good, sometimes... well not!

Originally we had plans to go to Utah so that we could have some work done on Tyler's legs. But Shriner's and our schedules got all messy really fast. So we have plans to do it again in a few months. We were a bit bummed and frankly I was so frustrated. It is so hard to be stuck in one place. We haven't been anywhere in almost 2 years ( for fun, not for surgeries) and I was struggling with needing a break. I decided to bite the bullet and go ahead and TRY to drive the 12 hours on our own.

The "break" for myself never seemed to happen. I never got a chance to be alone in the entire week, but I didn't cry either. I always cry!! When I talk to D on the phone while we are gone, by day 2 or 3 I am in tears wishing we had never left. But I survived until the trip home, right around Page, before losing it!

The boys had a ton of fun and I tried to make sure they got to do things, but not get to overwhelmed. It was a pretty positive trip. On the  HUGE, fun ,plus side, we saw all of our cousins and the boys played till our heart was content.

Day one: Driving-

We left around 3:00 am. I have never driven so I was a bit nervous going. D and I had hoped that the earlier I left the more the boys would sleep, and well, that didn't happen.  They were awake the entire time to our first stop. We stopped for Breakfast in Flagstaff. Getting out when your temperature says 33 degrees is the BIGGEST shock to your system. Add that to a little boy that is Severely anemic and the fact that we left the Valley at 3 am and it was STILL 65 degrees. Needless to say we were a bit chilly.

About Page the boys fell asleep so I pushed to get to Kanab before they woke up. I was SO thankful to get to Kanab. I had researched every single town on our way and had the city parks of every single town so we could stop. It was the first time in my entire life that I was thankful that we have food issues and that I didn't have to stop to take little bladders to the bathroom. The park was heavenly and we were able to push out lunch till we found a McDonald's with a play place. ( In case McDonald's reads my blog, I wish they would make more places with amazing play places.... but nope. You sucked!)

* SIDE NOTE: *While at the park, the boys were met with 2 other little boys who lived there in Kanab. Tyler tried really hard to get them to play with him, but they were SOOO mean. I was so frustrated but needed the time to stretch out. But the grandpa was raising the boys and he had a dog. Oh boy did the boys LOVE that dog. It was a bitter sweet thing to watch. I was thankful when the grandpa stepped in with the mean kids so I didn't have to.

We pushed to Richfield where I KNEW there was a McDonald's with a killer play place ( thank you All Star Basketball teams) and we were able to stay there for an HOUR. Yes folks, I stayed at a McDonald's for ONE HOUR!! I knew what the last stretch held and I just hoped we made it with no more tears.

From Richfield to Orangeville was about 2 hours. Grayson decided he was all done and took off his seat belt more times than I could count. Finally I stopped pulling over and just let it go. Letting him go meant that I had a SEVERE anxiety issue but getting into the good old EC ( what us cool folks call Emery County and what we call it to make it sound WAY cooler than it REALLY is) and realized there were NO cars on the road and we were going to be OK. ( Longest part of the trip was the last 20 minutes. I could have fallen asleep then!!)

We pulled into my parents drive way in just enough time to hug and kiss on grandpa before he had to head to Priesthood conference. Aunt Nicky came down to see the kids and brought her dog, Oreo, aka our "cousin" so that they boys could play and she could kiss on a few faces. We were sad to miss my sisters kids but they would come the next afternoon.

I was so thankful to not be in a car any more. Had a great chat with my mom and was SOOOO thankful to go to bed.

The Plane Ride From Hell

Our plane ride to Utah was EASY EASY. The hardest part is just getting Grayson to leave Tyler alone. He really likes the window and looking out but Ty was on the window side. I don’t know why he always sits there. He can’t see out. He has no idea what he is looking at and would RATHER just watch his shows.

The getting through security in both places is always such a challenge. They have to test all of Ty’s medications but I don’t dare risk not having them in our carry on. This time I also decided to put the Ipads in a different bag than the rest of the stuff.  Plus I also realized that real snacks don’t have to be purchased AFTER so we were good to go.

So after a SUPER duper long long long week, I was really hoping that the flight would be uneventful. My dad was able to help me through the security line and got us to the other side. It is nice that Utah allows us to have an extra person if we aren’t using them for our Handicapped pass.

We get to our gate just fine and grab a burger and again, everything was fine so I really thought we had this one in the bag. As we went to our gate so we could early board I set Grayson down so that I could explain Ty’s needs to the lady. We get a pre -board disability pass so that we don’t hold up Everyone one the plane and we get as close to the front as possible. We found that the front seats have extra room for your feet but they don’t let you have a carry on close by. It has to be stowed so we go as close to that as possible.

We got on behind an older lady. She was super nice to start the trip. I thought we would have an empty seat but a cute girl named Kelsey got on. She was so nice and Ty charmed her to pieces. She even helped him count down and helped with his drinks.

As we got up in the air all of a sudden Grayson FLIPPED OUT! He was doing fine while we were taking off and I thought he would be settling in for a nap. He started that way and then started to scream. He screamed for the next HOUR AND A HALF. He bit a whole in the seat in front of us, he would bang his head against the window, he was scratching and pulling my hair. He was grabbing at my face so hard that he was leaving marks EVERYWHERE. I was mortified. I keep imagining that someone took a YouTube of what was going on. So as I was doing all I could to get this kid to calm down he stood up to take another shot at the seat and he GRABBED he ladies hair in front of us. She was a African American women and had super thin hair to start and he is RELENTLESS. I felt so bad for her. Her hair was entangled in his fists and I was about in tears.

I finally started to get him calm and the only thing that was working was letting him grab my hair and pull. So I let him. He was pulling and pulling and biting out chunks of it. It was horrifying and I start crying.

The flight attendant came to see if there was anything she could do. I said no and was getting help by the sweet girl tat was sitting by Tyler. I as able to pull out a container of Benadryl and I dosed him RIGHT UP! Within in ten minutes he had calmed down and he was fast asleep by the time we got to touch down.

They happily let us off the plane as one of the first ones. I seriously thought that the rest of the plane was going to clap for joy as we left. I was in tears as we were waiting for our stroller to be brought up. Grayson was OUT, thanks to the dose of benadryl that we got in him.

We cruised through the airport to see our dad. Oh Man! He was a site for sore eyes! After his scary car accident that week and some unmentionable issues that arose in Utah I was ready for my husband to give me a hug.

We got our luggage and headed to our car and back to the Valley of the sun. Dallas was awesome enough to remember to have gotten Easter Baskets out and filled and ready. The boys LOVED everything in them.  We were so glad to be home. We took a few minutes to just play and be together and then we started on the normal stuff, laundry and dinner. It was a perfect end to a long week. As husband and wife we were desperate

It was a perfect sunset that night and we were all snug in our beds. We came home to a feeling of love and peace.

This is our home.

The Last of the Trip

Thursday and Friday were nice and full of Labrum’s and Gales. Well like Ti Ti pants and grandma and Grandpa Labrum. We got together Thursday but nothing to report really, just that I was glad it was over. But Friday was a BLAST. I left totally exhausted.

We figured we would go to a pizza buffet that had an arcade and bowling and best of all RACE CARS! This also meant that Grayson was going to be in Car heaven and Ty would be in bowling heaven.

When we got there, we found the toddler area and it had a car that Grayson could drive. It was perfect. There was a carousel and mini golf and the best of all the game, GO CARTS!!

We waited in line for the go carts and Ty and I were able to drive. He was in HEAVEN. It was so, so much fun!

Saturday we went bowling with the Browns and then came home and dyed Easter eggs. I thought my boys would LOVE LOVE but they only loved it. Ty only kinda liked it. But Grayson loved it.

Sunday found us having breakfast with Grandma and then heading to the airport. Grandma and Grandpa Labrum were dying to send us off as were Grandma and grandpa Brown but either way we made it.

The air plane ride deserves it’s own post.

Utah Trip Continued

The amazing El Zaribah Shrine here in Arizona are the ones that take care of the out reach clinic for Shriner's. We LOVE them. We always enjoy the clinic and all the fun stuff they have to offer us and for all the fun stuff that they do while we wait. But the best and most amazing part of ANY Shrine is what they provide for us.

After setting our appointment with the Shriner's Hospital we got our travel plans done by the El Zaribah. Meaning, they make AND PAY for our flight. They fly the patient and one adult. Grayson is free ( but not for long) so we were able to get to Utah at not cost to us. Dallas had to work so it wasn’t a huge deal but we miss him and wish he could go with us next time.

Turns out, Utah got the dates wrong so we had to make changes to our flight dates and they were amazing and we got to stay around for a holiday weekend which made it a little easier to see both grandparents AND get our procedure done.

We flew in on Monday . We were picked up by our Aunt Nicky Poo. We dropped her off at work, took her car and went to McDonald's. Ty played and played and MIGHT have ate a little. Grayson did the same. We picked her up and went to our grandma and grandpa’s Browns. We were happy that we got to stay there and have some extra time with them. And we had awesome beds.

Tuesday was Ty’s procedure. They put him totally out for these because they are almost to the bone and VERY painful. We got there and we were getting prepped to met with everyone. Nicky kept Grayson for me, so it was a great chance for one on one time with Ty. We met with Dr. Gooch. She doesn’t agree that we shouldn’t do phenol. She thinks he responds well, does great and that even if he has dystonia then we deal and get his muscles under control. She begged us to not start clipping yet though.  We agree are with her second opinion a lot.
IMG_1160.jpg

We were able to convince them to NOT give Tyler Versed. He literally becomes this VIOLENT, VIOLENT, little boy that pulls out IV’s and kicks and basically beats the crap out of everyone, including me!  They agreed and said we could try it without.

I got Ty dressed in his little gown and his little bum was showing. I went into the bathroom and came back out and Ty had disappeared. He started walking around the halls and happened to wander into another persons room. Her name was Breanna. She had been there about 2 weeks. Mind you, the hospital doesn’t have LOTS of people or rooms so Breanna had been feeling pretty down. Her parents were both there. Breanna had to have her spine fused a few years ago and was having complications with them. One had to be taken out and she was losing a little bit of her ability to do the things she wanted.

As I went looking for Tyler I heard a sweet voice saying, “ My name is Tyler Brown. I am seven. I live in Arizona.” I went in to save the poor people from my child. I was met  at the door by Breanna’s mom. Ty climbed up on this girls bed and was laying there with her. The mom burst into tears and the dad just stared. I thought, “ Seriously Tyler you can’t just do whatever you want. Sheesh.” As I was ushering him out, Breanna asked if he could stay until he had to go. I reluctantly agreed.
IMG_1167.jpg
When I got back from taking him into surgery her room was empty. She was able to go home. We got a little note from her mom.  The note said that Breanna had been really down and had asked for a blessing helping her to understand how she could be OK with losing some abilities. Her dad said that he felt very impressed that she would find the answer, but he told her he didn’t know when or how. Her mom said that as Tyler was walking around talking to them, Breanna saw Tyler as a answer to her prayers. The mom said that Ty was exactly what they all needed and the reason they asked him to stay was because they wanted his little spirit to be with them as long as they could.  When Ty left Breanna got released and she told her mom that if he could be brave and do hard things, she would work super hard to do her best.

The nurse that took care of us said that she had never met a little boy quite like Tyler. I have to admit, neither have we. Ty is one of a kind. When he was small people would stop and say stuff. We always thought that he was cute. I mean COME ON! We made him. When we had Grayson, people still stopped us. But people still stop us about Tyler. He draws in EVERYONE. He is polite, kind and most of all he NEVER complains about his situation. I do. I do a lot, but never a word is uttered from his sweet spirit.

On the way to surgery me and Ty were wheeled by the basketball court on the upper floor of the hospital. ( Yes you read that right... a HUGE play room on the upper floor of the hospital) He was quickly fixated on going to go play basketball. We went into the waiting room and he got a hat and we talked about what was going to happen and how much I loved him. I told him I loved him to the Mystery planet and back. He told me he loved me to the mystery planet and back and that he was going to visit the moon and come back to him so we could go play basketball.
IMG_1162.jpg
The second he said he loved me to the mystery planet and back I lost it. I  can’t imagine what I would do without this little boy. My sweet baby. The mystery planet is not even far enough away to show him how much I love him. But he was telling me all about the stuff he was going to do on the moon. That him and Chicka were going to have a bubble gum nebulizer and they were going to fly to the moon and get rocks and come back out and play basketball.

Soon they came in and took him from me. My heart broke. I let them have him and I went to breakfast. Nothing tasted good so I headed back to the room. Decided to take a nap and wait for my Super Hero to get out of surgery. Faster than I imagined, he was back. They left the IV in his hand this time so he had to wait to go play basketball. They said that they have only heard about going to play basketball.

After about 20 minutes and a little bit of begging from Tyler, they checked to see if he could get out of his bed and head out to play ball. 20 minutes after surgery and my son, who had stuff done on his legs, is now going to be going out and playing basketball.

We played for a few minutes, then went and got him lunch and then played some more. He butted into several other games in which he quickly won over the hearts of other people. We packed up our stuff to go and Aunt Nicky brought our brother to come get us. We went to her place to let her dog out and to take a small walk around. Then headed up to have a quiet evening with his Grandparents.
IMG_1169.jpg

IMG_1172.jpg

Tyler did so great. He is so amazing. He has YET to complain. He tells me that his legs feel all better now. I have watched the bruises go away  but watched the way he is walking and I cringe, but know that it won’t last forever.

The next day, was suppose to be the day I got some stuff done at 2 colleges and didn’t. So we are doing them all from here now. The rest of the week, will be up soon.........

A Trip to Utah

We saw a whole bunch of doctors the last 2 months. We got some changes on the front and a new diagnosis that was a little hard and I felt I needed a second opinion. We had already put into place a time to go to Shriner’s and back to our regular doctor. But in order to do that, we needed to go to Utah.

We saw the newest Rehab doc in the valley. She was highly recommended by our orthotic dude and we needed one closer for baclofen refills. It isn’t really something our pediatrician felt comfortable doing. We had to go in to Phoenix for it.

Total side note: PCH added a whole new part of a hospital. So so so so so nice! And the cafeteria was ROCKING!

The new doc was from Poland and doesn’t really like phenol. She also feels that Ty has a condition called Dystonia. I have done a bit of research and I think he might have it, but I also think there are things that he doesn’t have. I talked to my brother who also thought that maybe it was something that we should get a second opinion about. What I do agree with, is that we need to get his spastic muscles under control.

First plan of action was to spread out his baclofen through out the day. I was NOT happy about this. But we have cut his baclofen down to 40 mg instead of 60 and he is on PILLS!! He swallows them happily which means less gagging and trying to get everything down. It also helps that they seem to work better because we no longer have to crush them. He will also take his asthma medicine in a pill and that pesky smokers cough is almost gone!

Second plan, get the phenol. Come back and get botox. LOTS of botox. Then therapy, therapy, therapy. That is one thing I have truly slacked on is the therapy part of Ty’s care. He has such full days at school that I don’t want to try and take a exhausted dude to therapy and have him not do anything. So summer, we are really trying to find a center for him to go to or a therapy class or even to the foundation for a summer program.

Third, brace this heck out of his feet. This option is a good option but one we have explored before. Which means it hasn’t worked. We have tried and tried and he just can’t get braced to where he has good tone AND isn’t hindered. So we have the option of hindering his current movements or hindering him later in life. Sweet choices. So, I am calling to try and brace him and see what we can do.

4th, at some point he needs a pump. So we will look into it. We aren’t jumping the gun for that one. But we are seriously considering it.

As we went to Utah we got our second opinion. I am glad we did.

Next up... Our trip with surgery/shots and how amazing Tyler is!

From Warm sun to THIS!

Coming from warm and extremely HOT Arizona the cooler weather was so nice and so cool. It was great. We enjoyed going outside and playing and having Ty's birthday party outside. It has been amazing to see the fall weather and seeing the leaves change.

We have been diligent in watching the weather to see when to change from a jacket to a coat. When to put on long pants for Tyler and keep them on. When to spend the day at the park or when to bundle up in a blanket and stay in bed. But we were SHOCKED to see the drastic drop in temperatures this last week.

While Dallas and I both grew up here we have become accustom to the nice warm, and HOT weather we had there. Tyler has never been in this weather ( that he can remember) he was only one when we moved. He spent one winter here and we came and visited for a few days. This was the first time that breathe taking wind and snow has been in his world.

The snow didn't start to fall till he was getting ready for the bus but when it did fall it was a half blizzard. He would go watch and ask to go outside. He wanted to touch the snow, feel it and most of all THROW IT! He was having such a good time.

* Side note: We found Barney Christmas and he has been watching it almost non stop. They of course have SNOW and that takes him RIGHT to the window pointing and jabbering about the snow. You should SEE him dance and sing to the 12 days of Christmas~*

For the rest of the week Ty has been asking to go outside. He has been eating the snow (GROSS!) and he has been outside with no shoes and no coat and he has been out with a coat and till his cute little fingers were red.

Ty signing "cold." Look at his lips. He tries to say BRR!

His stool that he takes over all day long. Back and forth.

Telling Dad and mom that there is snow out there. All day he does this especially when he is watching his movie with snow in it.
Not sure that there is anything me and Dallas can do to prepare for the upcoming winter, but I am pretty sure a CUTE little Miracle is ready for snow, Santa and snowballs!

Back Among the living

We made it back to UTAH! After a 2 day grueling drive we pulled into Lehi about 1:30 pm on Tuesday. We have been without Internet ( other than our Iphones) for a few days and today some mega fast comcast was hooked up. HOORAY!

So here is the travel log for Posterity:

Saturday during the day Dallas was not feeling so hot. He had pulled his back while trying to get our move going and we decided it would be in every one's best interest to check into plane tickets. We checked on line and we figured we would be buying at least one ticket because Dallas had a round trip with rewards. Found out that it covered both tickets and the boys flew to Utah Sunday morning for $5.

My dad was amazing enough to come to my rescue and help us drive back the moving truck. We had planned to have him drive the truck and Nicky go from car to car to keep Ty and everyone happy. I was extremely NERVOUS. Like I had a stomach ache for a month. The idea of keeping Tyler entertained and not screaming for 12 + hours was enough to make me sick.

Anyway, the flight for the boys took off Sunday morning at 11:30 and Aunt Nicky flew in to help drive at 11:40. So she missed them by a few minutes. Dallas said Ty did awesome. So my anxiety disappeared quick.

Because they had to get there early on Sunday I had an hour to waste. My dad and the people I hired to help clean had my house empty and cleaned almost entirely by the time I got back to the house. Which was amazingly NICE! And a special THANK YOU to Corrine and her Hubby. They wouldn't take any money. ( Neither would Kelsey but I forced her!)

Monday I ran a few errands and waited for the carpet people. They missed their appointment so we got a later than we had hoped start. We started about 10:30 am. Some how we got separated ( OK, we know how we got separated) Thanks to google maps and my dads GPS they took the i-10 route and I took the 101 route. I ended up passing them up at some point so we played catch up and drove for 6 LONG LONG LONG hours to Kanab.

We stayed in Kanab and had the most uneventful trip from Kanab to Lehi. It took about 4 hours. It was sad to see so much of the country side on fire.

We meet up with Dallas and Tyler at the new house. Dallas friend Ryan ( amazing person... I might add) and Scot came to help us move in. His dad helped as well. The other people that were coming all had the flu. Apparently on Sunday someone had a flu bug and gave everyone ( except Dallas and Tyler THANK GOODNESS) the pukes.

So now we are amidst boxes and unpacking. Tyler is adjusting ok as long as no one he doesn't know is in our house. He can't spend HOURS in the pool because the water is cold. This morning we watched all our neighbors get their kids on the bus and talked to the people across the street who send their kiddo to the special needs preschool to get an idea of what we are looking at. We heard some sprinklers go off so Ty and I took a walk.

I didn't think he would like the sprinklers but I was wrong. He loved them. In his PJ's Ty was out in someone else's driveway getting wet. He loved it. I got some pictures and will have to post them a little later.

We have been getting each room done one box at a time. we got our living room all set up. We also have a family room that is separate. We are using our loft as a playroom of sorts for Tyler. It has his TV set up and we finally this afternoon got around to getting his ball pit and books out. A few more boxes and we will have his whole set of toys for him to throw.

He is really liking having the steps. Sadly they are so novel for him that EVERYTHING to the bottom. We haven't had any falls yet.

The first line of business to get the house a little more "Tyler" Friendly is to get new door handles. He can't turn the actual knobs but can get the levers open. Its not safe for him to not be able to get out. Plus it hinders him.

We are super happy and tired and full of boxes. A few more days.

Ode to Boxes

Oh boxes.
While I know you are moving me closer to my mom. I HATE YOU!
Oh Boxes
While I know you are sending us to a new adventure. I hate you.
Oh boxes
The places we will go. I HATE YOU!
Oh boxes
I am filling you up knowing I will have to empty you in a few days. I HATE YOU!

That is our day in a nutshell. I hate boxes. My stuff is slowly getting put into them and we are slowly dwindling on the days we have left to get it all in. Ty has had his respite person taking care of him while I pack and he gets so clingy because he hasn't seen me. It makes me sad. I hate you boxes.

Tomorrow is my birthday and we are driving into Phoenix for one last orthotic appointment. Dallas and I are going to lunch so we can spend a little time together and then back to the grind of packing. That leaves us 2 days of packing .....

YIKES.

I HATE BOXES

A few conversations I have had this week!

I have had a few very interesting conversations the last few weeks about education and the "right" place to place Tyler for Preschool. It is just preschool and I know he won't learn how to do times tables or even read in preschool so I shouldn't be to concerned. WRONG!? Though I know that he won't be solving world peace of even the health care reform problem it is important to get him the in the right place to get the right services so that when he is 8 he can solve those problems (Sarcasm noted!)

When we moved to Arizona we were not in the school system so Early intervention was all I had to set up. It was a maze and once I figured out how it all worked and was tapped into resources the maze was not so bad. The services were pretty good and when cuts where made I wanted to speak up but nothing was cut of ours and we knew we would have it much worse someplace else.

Once we got into a place we liked we stuck with it. We have been at Coester Cares for over a year and a half. We like it. We have gotten so that Ty is doing so well with his therapist and never cries. Though Jackie and him have stubborn fights a lot! They are a awesome support system for me and a great team for Tyler.

Arizona long term care was amazing and the transition into preschool was pretty uneventful and we learned a lot for year number 2. First year of preschool was what we felt a trial run for this year. We looked at other options and thought of the school for blind children but made a different choice and got him in a different class. The class this year is amazing. It is exactly what he needs.

So our choice to move to Utah was not as abrupt as it seems. We had jokingly talked about, prayed about and then it was presented and we jumped at the chance. Yes we are moving quickly, but most everything is falling into place.

One of my major responsibilities is to get Ty in school and figure out what services and where to get them is my "realm." Doctors are hopefully going to be our old favorites: Marissa, Tim, Dr. Walker, and Dr. Larsen. We are adding Dr. Gooch and possibly a developmental ped and MAYBE a neurologist is the above favorite of Tim and Marissa wont' drug our child!

Those were the east set up. Its been the SCHOOL that has been the hardest. Conversations have gone like this:

CALL one:

Me: Hi, we are moving from another state and need to know where in the district we will be attending.
Lady: What grade?
Me: Preschool. He needs the special needs preschool and I am not sure what school has them and I would like to know what school we would be possibly attending.
Lady: Um yeah we don't give out information like that.
Me: Um could you transfer me to the preschool department.
No one was there to talk to. I left a message.

Message was returned the other day.

Frank: What information were you looking for?
Me: What type of services are offered in class?
Frank: well you know he has to qualify right?
Me: yes we are currently getting services here in Arizona.
Frank: Do you know what his services are called
Me: Yes he gets all of them OT,PT, Speech and vision and music
Frank: Oh yeah he would get services.
Me: where is the preschool closest to us?
Frank : I don't give out addresses. We don't know you.
Me: Um I just want to google the vicinity so I know how far we are busing or taking him because I would like to look at the school for the Blind.
Frank: You know you have to qualify for that?
Me: Yes. Do you know what the qualification's are?
Frank: bad vision.

Today my conversation went like this:

Blind lady: I heard you wanted to know about preschool.
Me: Yes. My son needs vision services
Blind Lady: How do you know?
Me: He is almost legally blind and has nystagmus and ROP
Blind lady: Oh yeah.
Blind lady: Do you know your district
Me: yes, they have a current IEP and have all the stuff they need to tell us what we need but I want to know what services you have
Blind Lady: Oh well we won't tell you what they are until we know what we can give you.
Me: Where is the preschool.
Blind lady: We cant' give you our location.

I said thank you.... and hung up.

Coming from an education family, I fully plan to support public education. I also know that as a parent that the teachers want you to be involved. I love to know what he does in school so we can talk about it with him and ask him questions even if he doesn't answer us back. WE excitedly get into his book bag EVERY DAY to see what is in there. I want him to succeed and want him to have the best possible chance to do that. But just tell me the address so I know if I am busing my child 45 minutes in rush hour traffic that may or may not turn into 2 hours.

I am not going to stalk and steal a baby with issues. I have one of those. I just want him to go to school and be in the right place for him.

I have felt dumber by talking to some of these people!

So, what we have learned. Ty will be attending the elementary just down the street. They just built it and it is brand new. Miss Holly is the teacher there. ( I dragged it out of the guy when he realized that I knew what we needed etc) The blind school may still be an option but we are going to be looking at if he gets 4 days and how much speech. Speech is HUGE!!

Other conversations have been about health care that I will leave to YET another post!

Moral of the story... Don't ask questions about your child's education. They might think you are a stalker!

Utah..... Home?

Just over 2 years ago we decided to strike out on our own and Dallas took a job with Paypal and we packed ( ok I had movers and packers) and moved. We had a sick baby. And I say baby with all the honesty I can. Looking back he was SOOO tiny. Don't believe me he was TINY! We thought he was a big boy then! But we moved right after his second skull reconstruction. We were determined to do it on our own.

And we did.

In 2.5 years we have done so many things that we set out to accomplish by just moving to a new state. We set a goal and as a couple we reached it together. As a Family we rode the ride. We have met and made some wonderful friends while here. But we are ready to move on and start new.

After talking it over and "sleeping on it" (aka praying and looking at options) we decided to go for it. We looked at houses over the weekend and found a cute house to rent and we are so excited to get to Utah and escaped the HEAT! ( Remind us of that when it is snowing)

This is where we are moving to. We are super excited. It has a unfinished basement and the blue wall is being painted. Otherwise it is exactly what we were looking for. We are excited to move and not excited to pack!

We will be rolling into Utah on September 1st. Anyone who wants to help unload ( D is buying food) we would appreciate it!

The upper post.......

After the last post you are probably thinking that we couldn't have had a good time but we did. I swear we did. We do tend to mix the good and the bad. I guess if it weren't for bad luck we wouldn't have ANY luck at all.

So, here it is. Complete with photos. ( photos may end up in a slide show. There are a few of them.)

Friday Dallas took us to the airport where we had a very uneventful flight. We were on the plane with a few families and all the kiddos on the plane were very good. Ty likes to look out the window and he didn't make a peep the whole trip. Little Einsteins and books make for wonderful plane companions.

The first leg of our trip was with grandma and grandpa Labrum who were waiting anxiously at the airport for Tyler and I. Aunt Nicky was with them and she was the most excited to see Tyler. Ty on the other hand just wanted down. He was off and didn't care who was with him as long as he could walk. He walked the entire way to the car holding hands with Grandma.

We decided to stay up in SLC the first night because of time and so that we could spend some time with Aunt Tammy and her kids. Plus we owed grandma and grandpa a nice dinner and there really isn't any place to take them in the EC. We decided to eat at Braza Grill. It is a huge huge favorite of mine and Dallas'. YUMMY.

After dinner we went to the hotel and swam our hearts out. Ty and I were in the pool for almost 2 hours. He was so funny. He would wait for grandpa to count to three and he would jump in. even without holding on to me. He would just go. He loved it. Him and grandpa shouldn't have been allowed to have so much fun.

(On the way out we ran into Uncle Barrett's best friend Evan. Totally random but fun. I haven't' seen him for a long time.)

The evening didn't go so hot as Ty decided that pool water and meds didn't go hand in hand and he threw up. Which made for a EARLY... and I mean EARLY (4 AM) wake up for Tyler. Thank goodness for computers and movies.

We ate breakfast and waited for Aunt Tammy and her kids to come over so we could go do something. Grandma wanted to go to the carousel at the mall so we headed there first. Then we went to the aquarium. It happened to be the anniversary for the aquarium so it was packed. About half way through Ty decided he was all done and we spent the rest of the time waiting and doing meltdown control. I knew we had a long day a head of us so I thought I would try super hard to get him to be happy. Remember we had a early wake up.

We ate lunch and headed to Aunt Linda' s for a visit. Aunt Linda has a puppy. Ty is not always a fan of pets but he had a great time. We pulled a little stool out that Ty and his other cousin Daphne just love. He sat there and played with the dog for a while. He even fed the dog a biscuit. He also figured out that he really liked the piano. He would play that thing and then run back to the dog. I think it was from his Little Einsteins that he decided that he liked it.

After Aunt Linda's we headed into Provo to visit with Grandpa Rue. I am told he usually looks a lot better because this day he was not doing so well. He looks so much older than he did when we came in January. He is in a rehabilitation center and hopefully he will get better and head home. Sometimes he can be a bit stubborn. ( Not sure where Tyler ever learned that skill)

After Finally heading into the EC I thought for sure that my sweet little man would have taken a nap. NOPE. So Tyler is wide awake and ready to play. Lucky for me. We went and jumped on the trampoline, swung on the swing and froze our little bum off. It was freezing.

Sunday was pretty uneventful. Church is smaller than it was when I lived there. Ty had a hard time at church. Lots of new people. Mom couldn't get to far away without him freaking.

Monday we decided would be the perfect day to go to the new pool in the big CD. It was over cast and raining. Being the brilliant and loving mother, I didn't sunscreen up Tyler or myself. Lucky for us, I am HUGE and blocked the sun from Tyler. BUT I was able to get my taste of the sun. My back is fried. Currently it is peeling. Ty LOVED the pool though and he had a great time. That new pool is amazing.

Tuesday was a laid back day. No place to go. We had a ward BBQ to attend and we were doing some stuff for Aunt Ruanne. We went to the park to play and throw balls. Ty had a blast. He also walked on the grass. Something he wouldn't do before.

Wednesday was the next part of our trip. We were heading up to spend time with the other grandparents. We had tickets to the temple open house. Then we were off to be with the Browns.

Thursday we had a day of shopping and cousin Noah's birthday party. We ate at the golden corral and we had cake and ice cream at the Martins. It was a great evening. Makes us a little sad we don't get to have to parties all the time. BUT you can all come down in September. Also on Thursday we met up with Amy and Oli. Dallas and Amy's hubby Todd have been best friends forever. Ty and Oli are about 3 months apart if you take into account our adjusted age! They were so cute but I couldn't get Ty to hold still long enough to get a good picture. Hopefully Amy got a few better ones. It was so good to see both of them

Friday we hit the zoo. It was a lot of fun. Ty got to see so many more animals there than he did at the phoenix zoo. So glad we went. It was worth it. He had a small meltdown and needed to take a nap but otherwise he was very good. It was a long day but he fared well.

Saturday was go home day. We were getting ready to head out to the airport when we noticed him getting sick. That was the bummer of the trip. He spent the flight throwing up and Sunday and today getting better. So far he seems OK. He is on Tami flu because of our exposure to the Swine flu. Dallas and I are both sick. Hopefully it will be short lived and we can get back to our daily routines. HOWEVER, With swine flu exposure Dallas is required to work from home 7-10 days or until our symptoms are gone. Whichever is greater.

Any way... that is our vacation. Here is the promised pictures.

Countdown to Vacation

Sometimes I wonder if visiting in laws. outlaws and parents, or whatever you want to call them, is really considered a vacation. In order to go I feel like I have to overload our schedules to make sure that everything got done before we go. And sometimes things just happen to land on the week we are leaving, making it a busy busy week.

To add insult to injury I just spent 4.5 hours reading a online driving course that had many typos and tried to insert humor. It even spent the amount of time you spent on a page. So if you were a fast reader you had to entertain yourself for 1-3 minutes while the timer counted down.

Today was the first day to start off our week. Dallas has had insomnia for about 2 weeks now. His meds for his insomnia are apparently NOT working. I, being the very supportive wife I am, have taken full advantage of his early morning rising to sleep in. Why not ? He is only getting about 2 hours of sleep and is up around 4 am. Just in time for Tyler to wake up. You read right 4 am. SOMETHING has to be in the water in this house.

We got the jeep back for about 3 days last week and had to take it back. A few things weren't working right so we had to take it back. Normally that isn't such a huge deal but this week it is a huge huge deal.

Because Dallas and I are going to be going to different places for vacation ( yes you read that right as well) we have a lot to do to get each other ready to head off to two different places. And because of the above mentioned insomnia today was a good indicator of how busy the week will be.

Dallas started the day with Ty around 4 am. Dallas sent Ty back to bed and he woke for good around 6. Dallas was nice enough to stay up and feed, change and play with Ty. At around 8 Dallas came in and Ty and I leave for the morning. We checked my mail and played and read books. Woke up D to head to his docs appointment for new meds and we got ready for our busy afternoon.

I feed Tyler at noon and hope he eats fast enough for us to get out of the house one. We have to be out on time because this appointment is a beast to be late for. We leave at exactly 12:58. We have to travel to St. Joe's in downtown Phoenix. I am getting super good at finding my way to 7th street ( or is it ave) and we make it before 2.. barely. Only we find that our appointment isn't till 2:30. Given the drama we had last appointment I was fine with being early.

*side note* While waiting in the waiting room you run into a million people. Because of the type of doc it is the disabilities of the people are usually very apparent. Today a really cute mom who's daughter had severe CP went from patient to patient introducing herself and her daughter and touching ( which I cringe thanks to the NICU mom in me) and being so nice. She sat next to Ty and asked what his diagnosis is. I told her and she was so sweet. She said she would have had no idea. That it was obvious to her that we work hard with him. Ty looked up at her and smiled and then waved at the little girl and the mom tried to get this little girls hand opened and Ty reached up and took her hand and danced with her. It was super cute..What amazing spirits they all have. *

The appointment got us in around 2:40 and only lasted about 20 minutes and we were out the door, with new appointments for botox in the works. We head out to the parking lot and head home. We stop at the grocery store for dinner and head home.

Leaving at one, getting home at 5. Day one

Tomorrow we have Physical therapy, occupational therapy and music therapy. I have to take the rest of my driving test. And some time find a way to get BACK into the dentist. The root canal apparently doesn't work because my tooth is killing me.

Wednesday we are having to head back into the city with a prescription for titanium braces and smo's. And to make it to our new speech time. Dallas also goes into Scottsdale but we only have one car. And I need to make it into the chiropractor.

Thursday is kinda a lazier day. But is our anniversary. So with all our week busy busy we are hoping to get out and have a dinner or something before we embark on our vacations. Did I mention I have to pack for 2 and make sure #3 is all set to go before Ty and I leave the valley of the sun......

Oh it makes me tired.

But 3.5 days to go. Weather better stay lower than 100......

UTAH (and San Fran for D) here we come...

Updates?

So I have been watching and stalking and waiting for everyone to update and I don't even update. The sad part is we haven't even done enough to update.

Life is going good. Ty is so much fun. We have our moments when things are a little touch and go and I would like to fed ex him or UPS him to his grandparents but who doesn't when they are three.

We had a good couple of therapy sessions for Tyler and he is doing so well. I hate that therapy doesn't see as much progress as it use to but he had a great therapy session in speech. We still have no answers as to what to do to make this kid talk. At least some signs are coming through .

We have a scheduled ABR for him next Tuesday. If there is some hearing loss I am hoping that we can reverse or help him with hearing aids etc and get him on to communicating.

We are planning a trip to Utah in June so be prepared if you want us to visit, hang out or take photos.. How fun for me!!

We plan to hit the Zoo and the Pool and as many favorite eating establishments that we can fit in. We are coming from the 6th -12th... so long enough..

Other than that we are here, we are getting warm and Arizona is in full spring bloom.

There is no place like home

Oh I can't even tell you all how nice it is to be home. I can't begin to tell the emotions and things that have made home even better.

Our flight home was delayed almost an hour. By the time we got on the plane Ty was out pretty quick. It was a pretty laid back flight. Totally packed. It was nice to get into the airport here in Arizona.

We quickly retrieved our bags and sent Dallas off to the long term parking to get the car. I put together the car seat and took Ty out to wait for Dallas. The air was warm and the night was perfect.

The feeling of home is something that I will never get tired of. This city is just where we need to be. This is our home.

Thursday I was able to get into my dentist ( thank goodness) but because of the infection in my tooth I have to wait till Tuesday to get it fixed. I was able to enjoy the day with Ty and my heating pad!

Today I got Ty off to school. Went back to bed and got up in time to give my roaster to the Relief society for a funeral and I was able to get a nap in thanks to respite. This toothache is really kicking me hard!

Home... that is where I want to be. Home sweet home

The Purpose of our trip - Tuesday

I have so many emotions about our trip to Shriner's hospital. I have so many thoughts about Shriner's in general. I can't always find the words to describe it just yet. I will do my best.

The whole purpose of out Trip to Utah was to take Tyler to Shriner's hospital. The appointment was to get a consult and possible procedure to help his legs and muscles. The purpose was and is to improve his quality of life and to make him walk.

Rewind to December 23rd:

After 9 months of waiting we got moved up to only having to wait six months and we were able to see and meet Dr. Kwasnica. We discussed botox and other options on how to make him move better and avoid more problems later on.

We told her about our consult for Phenyl and she agreed we should do it. We should get another opinion and that she was more than happy to work with Dr. Gooch at Shriner's.

As we prepared to go we went to the inter net and got as much information as we could. I have exhausted poor google search. I have exhausted my head, heart and knees. I have shared with Dallas, we have shared together and we have prayed SO hard to get the answer to what we need to do with and for Tyler.

The day of the appointment was anxiety filled for me. I had a horrible night the night before and was up till way past a decent hour to help me have a clear head. I was frustrated and tired and more anxious than I could describe.

We got to Shriner's and headed in to check in. Because we had to schedule the procedure from out of state we had to be admitted as a patient and be prepared to go into surgery for the procedure and then meet with the doc for a few minutes before.

Ty and I fell asleep waiting. All I could hear in my head was words that I was going to make the wrong choice and how grateful I was that Dallas was also there to help me. I was also so thankful for a Heavenly Father who I called on Heavily that day.

Dr. Gooch came in and we talked and she started looking at Ty's muscles and legs and feet. She made our decision easy. She was not convinced that at this time he needed Phenyl. She felt that botox was the right way to go right now. She was very impressed with Tyler. She felt that his deformed feet could possibly be fixed with the botox and bracing. She also said that he should be an independent walker. Because of his muscle tone now he may have a hard time walking long distances but he is doing VERY well.

We were then released as an impatient ( about an hour later) and we were headed to Grandma Brown's house.

In the hour of waiting and being released Dallas waited for the nurse and I experienced more of the wonderful spirit of Shriner's. We went to the play area of the hospital. 2 boys who had been patients for several years were there playing basketball. Ty was in heaven. He went over and the 2 boys were so cute with Tyler. They got him a ball and let him throw it at the basket. He would clap when they would make it. He would follow one of them around.

Ty played in the car there and on the motorcycle. He laughed and played.

I cried.

There is such a spirit there. There was a spirit of inclusion from the kids. A camaraderie from the parents and the idea of love from EVERY single person who donates to that place.

The amount of love that is poured into that building is immeasurable. The amount of love and dedication is more than I can imagine. The spirit of charity and care is inspiring and the children who are served there are the luckiest kids in the world.

I know that some day Tyler will have a easier time walking. That the medication and the treatments are no a cure but a way to help him have an easier life. This couldn't be done without Shriner's.

If you ever feel inclined to donate or to give to a good cause please think of Shriner's and their amazing care.

"The reason charity never fails and the reason charity is greater than even the most significant acts of goodness he cited is that charity, “the pure love of Christ” (), is not an act but a condition or state of being. Charity is something one becomes." Elder Dallin H Oaks

Because of their true Charity they have become something. I pray for them and thank them everyday of my life!

The upper floor where parents wait for thier cildren. And the children play as they are waiting for procedures etc.
Tyler playing on the girls motor bike but didn't mind it was pink.

Only car he will be driving for a long time if not EVER. He was having a blast scooting it aross the floor and honking the horn.
Ty happy as could be in the best places in the world. They can feel the spirit there.

Our "vacation"

Leg one of our trip is almost over. We leave the EC ( Emery County) tomorrow and head to the "big city" Of SLC to pick up our dad and head to the other grandparents house. It has been action, family and friends packed!

Thursday was a long not fabulous day. I did so much laundry and folding I thought I would die. All of the laundry was done. Then came packing.Got that done. Had to formulate a plan to get Dallas and the rental car back to the rental place and then Dallas off to his meeting while me working. We got the plan going and our hab person was 20 minutes late making it so I no longer had a ride home from work.

Paid someone to take me home from work and was so nervous ( not to mention the entire veggie tray I ate) I wreaked some havoc on my digestive track ( OH TMI ) and I ended up not sleeping the entire night. Good thing Ty and I had taken a nap.

We left the house before 4 am and were headed to the airport. Very uneventful ride and we were able to get to the gate in plenty of time. (See above TMI for reasons that we were glad we were early.) Got aboard and almost empty plane. Me and Ty had an entire row to ourselves AND the row to the right and the entire back part of the plane was empty! We turned off Ty's entertainment and got going.

The ride was uneventful though I secretly wished I had my camera and had any idea how to make shots come out on the airplane. The sun came up while we were en route and we were above the clouds.

When they passed out drinks I made Ty a carnation and he wanted to sit in my lap. He zonked! and I was able to sit there enjoying the gorgeous scenery and smell my sweet baby. I was in heaven.

While en route the pilot said he was going to take some short cuts ( How do you do this in the air btw) and get us there a little early. Boy he was not kidding. We were scheduled to arrive at 8:35 and we got there before 8. Other than walking off the plane and getting smacked with 33 degree weather it was wonderful.

We went to see Aunt Tammy and the boys and stopped for breakfast then shopping at a few stores then headed to the EC. Ty and mommy slept for most of the ride and made it to Granny's house. We made a few rounds to see granny's friends then we decided that Ty should try his very first basketball game.

I was not sure how his sensory stuff would play out in the arena but we took him anyway. He LOVED it. He was wearing his glasses and was able to get right down on the floor. He got his own basketball and had a blast throwing it and making grandpa chase it. He would clap when everyone else clapped and had a great time.

Spartan basketball is not what it use to be but they won and we headed home.

Today was a great day. We had a few stops and went and saw Great Grandpa and Ty was able to try out a Food Ranch Donut. He LOVES donuts. Not sure he loved the Butterfinger ones that are so amazing but he did like the sugar ones.

Aunt Tammy and Uncle Josh we willing to drive down and see us here and we all went to the new swimming pool in Castle Dale. The water baby had a blast and loved being in the water. He was so brave and would go under the water and squeal and splash. He even let the others take him. Of course not for very long but it was something!

We came home and had a great dinner and then did NOTHING! Ty was exhausted and he was starting to get a little sick of the newness and scary new people but he had such a good time with Koy and Kayden. I can't believe how grown up Lexi is. She is definitely not a baby any more.

Pictures will be coming.

Tomorrow we are heading up to see the rest of the family and to get our consult. Sure missed Morgan and Max today!
