November 12th is prematurity awareness day. It is a day that we honor the countries tiniest citizens. Before September 21st 2005 I had no idea that this day existed. I am proud to be a mom of a miracle.
Despite my feelings of the March of Dimes they are sponsoring a petition for Preemies. Their motto is every baby deserves their nine months. Please take the time to support miracles from the Past, present and future and help eliminate prematurity.
1. We urge the federal government to increase support for prematurity-related research and data collection as recommended by the Institute of Medicine and the Surgeon General’s Conference on the Prevention of Preterm Birth, to:
* (a) identify the causes of premature birth;
* (b) test strategies for prevention;
* (c) improve the care, treatment and outcomes of preterm infants;
* (d) and better define and track the problem of premature birth.
2. We urge federal and state policymakers to expand access to health coverage for women of childbearing age and to support smoking cessation programs as part of maternity care.
3. We call on hospitals and health care professionals to voluntarily assess c-sections and inductions that occur prior to 39 weeks gestation to ensure consistency with professional guidelines*.
4. We call on businesses to create workplaces that support maternal and infant health. ( This will be posted in the next few days.)
*The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends that, unless medically indicated, scheduled deliveries should be after 39 weeks. This is because biological variations and uncertainties in estimating the beginning of a pregnancy introduces inaccuracies when assigning the due date. Preterm birth rates can be reduced by performing scheduled deliveries after 39 weeks.

I am the mother of 2 preemies. I can't imagine having a micropreemie. Your little guy looks like a true miracle. They almost delivered my boys at 25 weeks and it was the scariest time of my life. Before I had my boys I was absolutely ignorant of prematuity issues. Thank you for your wonderful post on premie awareness, and for showing your "baby".
Hi! My daughter is an RN and works in labor and delivery. She loves it!
what a blessing!!
{{{ hugs }}}}}
I have tears in my eyes. My daughter was in the NICU for 5 days for other reasons. Seeing all of the pictures on the wall of the preemies always made me cry!
Wow! I am so touched. Truly a miracle!
What a mircale Ty is indeed!!! Woohoo for TY and all the other micropreemies and preemies out there living large!!! (oops - pardon the pun!) :)
Hi,
My twins were thirty weekers. I've got a post going up on 5MFSN on Thursday. Just so you know, I know it's prem awareness month and I will honour it.
Your little one is gorgeous.
Wow, I have a preemie and had no idea there was a day for them. How cool is that? We were lucky in that he was 35 weeks, but he has still had minor issues related to his being preemie, if even just barely. My niece was 3 months preemie. Thank you for spreading the word!
My son was almost a 25 weeker. But by the Grace of God he was born at 34 weeks. Not without his share of medical issues.
How wonderful! I met a couple (Nick and Jennifer Hall) who started a foundation for parents of preemies called "Graham's Foundation."
http://www.grahamsfoundation.org/
I wrote a story about it on Story of My Life - about Nick Hall's Story.
Hope this helps!
Take care.
I have a nephew who was born at 33 weeks; he just got to go home two days ago :). His first night home? No one got any sleep.
Which is just what it was like for me when we brought our term baby home :).
Sweet picture to lead your post; it got my attention quickly because of our recent experience.
What a miracle. Thanks for sharing!
Such a moving and well done post.
What a blessing.
Thank you for this! I don't have a preemie, but my best friends little girl was born at 18 weeks. Its a miracle that these little ones can pull through! Ty is beautiful!

Congratulations on your miracle.
HUGS! He is so sweet! HAPPY WW!
Yay for preemies! :) ok, well I don't encourage them to come out early, but I love my TyTy!! :) I got extra time with him! And, it was time that is PRICELESS! ok, it is very expensive time according to the hospital bills but priceless in my eyes
Excellent post. I didn't know this day existed either. Great information.
As the mom of 4 preemies (although only one birthed by me), I signed previously.
Thanks for your advocacy.
I did not know that today was "Prematurity Awareness day" but I did know that November was prematurity month. I am not a mom of a premie and do not know the struggle first hand but my dear friends had a 25 weeker and I can not even begin to list their struggles everyday or what lies ahead. I applaud you for raising the awareness and sharing your story with everyone. This is the number one killer of infants and is not talked about enough. We definitely need to get the word out more. After reading a book that is soon to be release called "Blessed with
Tragedy" and now volunteering for the Early Journey Foundation, my heart goes out to all of the preemie parents in the world. My personal goal is to educate and help as many preemie parents and babies as I can. Good luck with your little miracle!
Good for you for getting the word out there about prematurity!! You're amazing!! :D
I signed :) We ALL love Ty!
what! Nancy didn't puke when Christmas decorations were put up!! YAY, Tyler has made her not a grinch! :)
