Pre-eclampsia ( toxemia)

Researchers at the Univeristy of Alberta say they have found a VERY acurate way to determine if a pregnant women will in fact have Pre- eclampsia. The researchers say that they have found a " metabolic finger print" that has a 90 percent success rate of prediciting if a women is going to have pre-eclampsia.

Pre-eclampsia is pregnancy induced high blood pressure. Back in my moms day it was also called Toxemia. You swell up, you leak protein in your urine and your blood pressure becomes dangerously high. The only known cure for pre-eclampsia is delivery of your baby. Sometimes this comes 3 months early or just a few weeks early. Pre-eclampsia is very dangerous for both mother and child.

Though this test can determine whether or not the mother will in fact have pre-eclampsia since their is no cure some are asking why have a test. The researchers say that in the future if we do have a way to know ahead of time we can try to prevent it. Watch closer and do things that will help lower the blood pressure and prevent it from progressing to dangerous and toxic levels.

Pre-eclampsia can also cause long term problems for the mother. She can have a stroke, lack of oxygen, long term heart disease and even diabetes. The more information that is available the closer researchers are for a cure!
